Day Three – Mini Lesson #3

Understanding How DNS Works

If you’re studying for CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or CompTIA Security+, understanding how DNS (Domain Name System) works is critical because it sits at the center of how devices communicate across networks—translating human-friendly domain names into IP addresses so systems can actually connect. For A+, it helps you troubleshoot basic connectivity issues (like why a website won’t load even when the internet is “working”); for Network+, it’s essential for understanding name resolution, routing behavior, and network services; and for Security+, it becomes a major attack surface, where threats like DNS spoofing, poisoning, and tunneling can compromise entire systems. In real-world IT roles, DNS problems are incredibly common yet often misunderstood, so mastering it not only helps you pass exams but also gives you a practical edge in diagnosing issues quickly and understanding how both normal operations and cyberattacks flow through a network.
